Chemistry is a study of matter and its interactions.  In this course we will seek to understand the nature of matter and the changes that is undergoes.  Chemistry is divided into the following areas that we will seek to how energy flows as a system through the lens of Chemistry and earth Science.

  • Energy
  • Earth Systems and Energy
  • Atom and the periodic Table
  • Chemical Reactions
  • Chemistry and Climate
  • Ocean Acidification

This is a challenging course.  You will need to pay attention, get all your work in on time, and be in class every day to ensure your success.  I do not necessarily teach from the book, so a lot of the information you will need will be present in class.  I expect a certain level of maturity, study skills, behavior, and writing and math skills.

If at any time you need additional help, please feel free to ask.  I am in the building before and after school everyday.  I recommend touching base with me before hand to let me know you will be stopping by so that I can set aside time, as I am often in meeting or preparing for class and at times it may be difficult to find me.

The Basics

Grading

Grades are earned by you, not “GIVEN” to you.  Grades are based on assignments, labs and exams, and are assigned as follows:

            A 93% and above       B+ 87%           C+ 77%           D   65%-69%

            A-   90%                     B   84%           C   74%            F    64.99% and below

                                               B- 80%            C- 70%

Assessments are 70% of your grade

Labs are 20% of your grade

Assignments are 10% of your grade

Assignments and Exams

You should always have your homework turned in at the beginning of class.   Late work will not be accepted. If you miss class, it is up to you to get the work from me when you return.  Please do this promptly; I will not let you make up work if you do not come to get it in a timely manner; you will get one day to make up work for every day you were absent.

Labs will be an important aspect of this class.  You will each be responsible for your own lab write-ups, even when you are working in groups.  All lab write-ups need to be done in your lab notebook.

Earning Credit in Lab Based Science Classes

As all NTHS science classes have a large lab component, completion of the labs in a laboratory setting is critical to meet minimum standards.  To that end, participation in the classroom labs to 75% is required to receive science credit.

Test and Quizzes:  You only get to take the test one time so come prepared.   If you miss a test you will have one week to make it up.  You must schedule a time with me for your make-up test, which will be given after school only.  If you fail to schedule a time, you will receive a “0” for that test.

Supplies

You will need the following: Composition notebook, pencils, pens, calculator and notebook paper.

Class expectations:

We will spend the first couple of days going over class expectations.  You will also receive a handout to keep in your notebook.

Behavior

I hope you enjoy the class and have some fun, but inappropriate behavior will not be tolerated.  In addition, OSHA regulations prohibit eating, drinking, or chewing gum.

Extra Credit

I do allow some extra credit, but you can only take advantage of this option if you have completed all of your daily work.

Parents, if you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call or email me at any time.

I am looking forward to an awesome year with you!
